Do we really Need Billboards in EDSA?

Last Thursday (September 28,2006), Tropical storm Milenyo brought devastation to Metro Manila. At first i thought this would just be another storm with all the fuzz about class supension on the news, but to everybody's surprise (as if you would consider it as a "surprise"), Bayani Fernando's "prophecy" on the fate of giant billboards in edsa became the biggest headline of the week.

BILLBOARDS OR 'WASTEBOARDS'

Billboards are supposed to show and advertise information (good information hopefully) on differenty products and commercial entities. Yes, it is the business people's right to do such but how about their responsibilities?
I heard billboard rentals would cost as much as 300,000 pesos per month and i think this fact on its profitability had caused many to put up their own billboard sites especially on the metro's main thoroughfare.Yes, it is good to advertise, but good advertisements depends of course on its content. Unfortunately, most advertisers would rather sacrifice the essence of good advertisement with profit motives. Sadly, most billboard right now especially in edsa shows nothing but flesh. Do they realize the fact that billboards are located in public places thus it is very much possible that the views especially of the youth will be very much affected with regards to what they see on the media. Not only that, too much billboards would mean ugliness. Even if you put the most beautiful woman on your billboard and that it is located with the rest of the other competing billboards, the result would not only confusion but a hell of eyesores and ugly sites.

SAFETY, ANYONE?

Safety of course should be the first priority. Look at what happened last week with what the devastating "Milenyo" had caused to the life of an fx driver and the others who were wounded by the incident. I mean the incident was not just caused by nature but also of the irresponsible who built those gigantic billboards. To my surprise (again), there is such a thing as a law that regulates billboard advertisements. I am not a legal expert nor a lawyer but it is a no brainer to interpret such rules and thus the people in the government should do its job on implementing it.
They should not wait 'till another 'Milenyo' to come and show us the devastation brought by these unsafe billboards. Or is it true that it takes a 'milenyo' for the people in the government to act?

For a young architect like Christopher Pangilinan, being educated made him a step closer to his dreams.Growing from an ordinary family in Bulacan, Christopher started out as a child who loves to draw things out of his imaginations. Raised by his parents with the essence of being educated, he thrived to excel in his beloved hobby and eventually made it as the core of his future profession. His experience in life growing out from an ordinary family has become his motivation to strive harder.

Aside from taking a financially demanding course in college, the challenges and frustrations brought by the brain wrecking mathematical equations has been the main hurdles he had encountered. With the support of his loved ones including his ‘girlfriends’ and friends, he made it through to college including his successful taking of the architecture board exams.

But things can be quiet harder when you are just starting up. After passing the board exam, Christopher realized that being a board passer is just the beginning. His professional life has brought new things to his life. The challenges of the real world are beginning to cut in through his nerves. Being a neophyte in the corporate world can be quite frustrating. But nevertheless, he treated the competition as a way to use his other skills to improve his self. He also realized that the prestige of being an architect should go beyond the title of the profession. He insists that being an architect in profession has an underlying factor of being disciplined and professional at all times. The responsibility of being the breadwinner in the family has made him mature enough to face life further.

Being able to finish his studies and achieving his ambition of becoming an architect, Christopher Pangilinan is a product of how life can be transformed by the promises brought by education. Truly, the youth of today should view his life as an inspiration towards being a productive citizen.
